This post is from a very old project – from last Father’s Day in fact! I did this project with my class, took photos of the statues with my iPhone, and then
forgot about them. I found them today, when I was emptying out the over
1,000 photos from my phone.
This was a really fun project for the kids to do.
They first traced their hands onto foam sheets, then cut out two copies (some
ended up using different colors on each side – it was up to them.) In between
the hands, they used thin craft wire, which they hot glued up along each
finger. The two hand parts were hot glued together, leaving the fingers
posable.
Next, students used a splatter paint technique to decorate
the base of the statues (which were wood blocks that I had my husband cut at
home.) When the blocks were dry, I helped students staple gun their hands to
the block, to make hand statues! They wrote a cute little message to dad on
them, then posed them however they wished (well... with one exception!) My boss said he was shocked that he didn't get any phone calls from people saying that kids were waving middle finger statues out the bus windows. I'm proud of their discipline.
