2 point perspective fantasy treehouses - grade 5/6

This is a fantastic project that I did with my grade 5/6 class before March break. I wanted to do something with 2 point perspective, as we've done a lot of perspective work this year in class, and I came across these 2 point perspective treehouses on artsonia. Loved it, and had to do them with my kids!

To draw the base of the treehouse, I showed students how to draw a 2 point perspective box with a roof, making sure to match their angles so that the effect would work. If you have trouble wrapping your head around 2 point perspective, I outlined how I showed them, below:

After they were done the base, they were free to do whatever they wanted. I even let them color them how they wanted, which is NOT something I like doing! Initially I had wanted them to use a watercolor marker technique, which students have used here and here, but so many wanted to use paints or markers or pencil crayons that I eventually just caved and let them do what they wanted.

Some students chose to draw traditional treehouses, some drew monster homes or haunted houses, and one opted for... carrots. The carrot house makes me laugh so much.

I love my student's creativity!

  2. I am so inspired by your perspective projects. Last time I taught one point I had so-so results. Maybe your tips will make the difference. Thanks for the two point graphic!

P.s. I did your marker painting technique with the kindergarten ears this week. They loved it!

  5. I just wanted to send thanks again. I used this idea with my year 5 class recently and one of my student's was selected for an art competition out of 120 students' across the grade. The creative freedom of these was so successful.
    Thanks so much, big fan!

  7. I would like to do this with my 5/6th grade students. Too bad your website is 'not secure'. If I want to show my students examples, my school's program would block your site.

  8. Looking forward to doing these with my students. Pretty sure I'll have to skip over the one that has the word Satan on it with a person hanging from the tree. Not sure that would go over well at a Catholic school.
