Optical Illusions - grade 5/6

Today I did an optical illusion lesson with my grade 5/6 homeroom class. Since I have them for the majority of the day, I am able to spend a nice chunk of time on art. They were able to complete the entire lesson in about 2 hours. Let it be known that this was a HARD lesson for them to do! It involved a solid hour of instruction, which I did step by step to make sure that they understood. Following that, we did a lesson on shading, including making a scale of how hard to push with your pencil (from 1-10, one section was a 3, one was a 7, one was a full on 10.)

If people are interested, I can do a tutorial for this lesson. Just let me know in the comments if you're interested!

Below is a hastily taken picture of the bulletin board:

Hope back to school has been great for everyone!

  1. Oh my gosh, these are SO cool. I love how some of them look pushed in, while others look pushed out, depending on where the chose to put which values, I guess.they must be proud! I'm amazed you could get all that done in a couple of hours. Why do you get the kids for such an extended time? It seems quite unusual.

    1. Hey Phyl! Thanks for the comments! My assignment is weird, and I always wonder if my readers actually understand what my teaching assignment really is. I'm not really an "art teacher". I am actually a homeroom, grade 5/6 French immersion teacher - I teach social studies, science, gym, language, health, art, dance, music, etc (all in French). But, I don't teach English, or math (which is done in English in Ontario.) So for 2 hours a day, my kids are with their English teacher. During that time, I do art to one/two class a day, and I get my planning time. So instead of breaking up art periods with my group over a week, I'll usually bulk them all together and do a big Friday afternoon art blowout with them. They're SO proud of their work!
